Love Our Spa Photos? So Do We!
I get so many compliments on my website, and lots on my spa photos. I’m so thankful for the team behind me, so I wanted to highlight an incredible artist that I have the privilege of working with: Heather Jones, well renowned Professional Photographer, and Owner of 365 Photography. She is asthetik’s exclusive photographer, so we wanted you all to get to know and love her as much as we do!
We Asked Heather…
What made you want to become a professional photographer?
Photography found me. I was wedding planning in 2013 when I went down the black hole of wedding blogs. I became obsessed with how photographers documented a wedding day and relationships. I didn’t set out to be a photographer. I am a teacher and that’s what I knew. Photography started as a hobby by taking photos of my kids, dogs, my friend’s kids and family. I took the time to learn from other photographers, YouTube and any free lessons I could take. I posted my pictures online and this led to people noticing my photos and booking my services. Now, it has become a rewarding career for me.
How many cameras have you owned in your life?
I have had several cameras through my lifetime, all of which have been Nikon. I have owned point & shoots, DSLRS now most recently the mirrorless system. [Be sure to stay tuned for the spa photos taken with her latest technology on our Instagram pages!]
Walk us through what you do to prepare for a shoot.
Before a shoot, I be sure all batteries are charged, memory cards are formatted and ready to go. I also be sure that my lenses are cleaned and ready to go. I also check to be sure anything maybe needed (especially for family sessions) like wipes, scissors, lens buddy, blankets, towels etc is packed and ready to go.
What is your favorite part about a shoot?
My favorite part of a shoot is watching the transformation of my clients. At the beginning they go from feeling awkward to feeling like a super model. At the end of the session [my clients] usually say things like “Wow, that was a lot more fun than I expected!” I’m also showing them the back of my camera throughout the session and they can’t believe it’s them because they look so good!
Tell us your favorite story while working.
One of my favorite memories was working with a family for a shoot. I primarily spoke with the girlfriend to get everything set-up and planned. Then part way through the
session her boyfriend tells me he wants to propose! I was very excited to capture that moment for them!
How much is involved in editing spa photos?
The editing process is one of my favorite parts. It takes the photos to a new level and really gives them that extra pop! The amount of editing can vary from shoot to shoot but I really take my time to make everything perfect for my clients.
How do you help your clients know what to wear to their session?
With each session, they have access to an online style guide called Style & Select. It allows them to see outfits together before purchasing. It was also created by photographers so they go through and suggest what will look best on camera. Clients can choose from various color palettes and style of clothing. It takes all the guess work out of coordinating outfits.
Do you recommend your clients using a hair stylist or makeup artist?
I ALWAYS recommend clients to have their hair and make-up done for their shoot. This gives them that extra boost of confidence when they are I front of my lens. Make-up artist are also trained to know what will make you look your best on camera!
What’s the best advice you can give someone looking for a photographer?
There are different styles of photography & photographers out there. Find someone who fits the style and aesthetic you desire. If you notice you are drawn to a particular shooting or editing style, find a photographer that is consistently displaying those types of qualities you’re looking for.
How do clients receive their images?
Clients receive their images in an online gallery. All the images are hand edited prior to receiving their gallery. The online gallery allows the client to download all of their images in full-resolution and order prints directly from the gallery. See all our spa photos here.
