What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a gentle, effective, and safe exfoliation process where we use a one time use sterile surgical grade scalpel to shave the surface of the skin to remove excess dead skin and Vellus hair AKA peach fuzz. Not only does it create deeper product penetration, but also makes skin look/ feel smoother and helps reduce the appearance of acne scars, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. As mentioned, the treatment also works to remove facial hair that can trap dirt and oils, and helps your professional really see your skin, and find/ extract smaller blemishes. Makeup also looks smoother and more flawless and without the fine layer of hair on the face, light more easily refracts off of the skin creating an ethereal skin glow!
Should I try a DIY Dermaplane Facial?
I’ve seen Dermaplane kits at TJ Maxx and Marshalls before. I always slightly cringe at them. I’m not saying that all DIY kits are bad, but these ones always make me nervous. Now just so that I don’t sound totally negative here’s a few pros and cons of DIY dermaplane razors:
Pro:
- Inexpensive
- Hygienic (only if meant for one time use) – Most hair is removed
Con:
- Not a sterile blade, can spread bacteria, especially if used more than once – Very easy to cut yourself and damage delicate skin
- Only removes hair, not dead skin
- Scratches skin, leaving uneven texture and potential points for infection
- May cause ingrown hairs
So there you have it, my honest opinion. I never recommend anything I wouldn’t do to myself, and I can definitely tell you I would never use one myself. This is one to leave to the professionals and not try at home.
What are the Benefits of a Dermaplane Facial?
Just to name a few:
- Even Skin Tone, Texture & Complexion. In some cases, the surface discoloration and pigmentation can be removed, depending on how deep the pigmentation goes below the surface of the skin. How ever, the glow and radiance shows after one treatment.
- Hair Removal. Say farewell to facial hair! Instead of waxing, which can sometimes irritate hair follicles and cause breakouts, (especially when done at home or improperly) dermaplaning safely removes hair removal with no downtime or side effects. And don’t worry, it’s a myth: your hair won’t regrow darker or thicker. However, with the hair out of the way, your esthetician can clearly see your skin, and what areas she needs to work on, and dermaplaning helps makeup go on perfectly, and look like you are airbrushed!
- Softens Fine Lines. Consistent dermaplaning can reduce the fine lines and some wrinkles. With this exfoliation process, the skin that is damaged by creating a wrinkle is removed during the treatment. but, as I say all of the time, if you take away from the skin, you must give to the skin vitamins and peptides to nourish it.
- No Down Time. You leave the spa looking fabulous. As I mentioned, It is important to continue to use sunscreen and hydrate this newly exposed skin, but your skin will be as soft as a baby’s bum and is glowy and ready for any event.
